Why Your Support Matters

Maya is just one of the hundreds of children who cross our threshold every year. Her story is a powerful reminder that healing is possible when a community comes together to protect its most vulnerable.

Finding Her Voice: Maya’s Journey to Healing

When seven-year-old Maya* first walked through the doors of our Children’s Advocacy Center, she wouldn’t look anyone in the eye. Clinging tightly to her grandmother’s coat, she was carrying a burden far too heavy for a child. Following a disclosure of severe physical abuse, Maya was anxious, withdrawn, and terrified of what would happen next.

But at the CAC, she didn’t find a cold interrogation room or a chaotic police station. She found a safe haven.

The Power of a Multidisciplinary Response

In the past, a child in Maya's situation would have had to repeat her painful story to police officers, child protective workers, attorneys, and doctors, retraumatizing her at every step. Thanks to our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) approach, Maya’s experience was entirely different:

  • A Single, Safe Interview: Maya met with a trained Forensic Interviewer in a cozy, child-friendly room. While they spoke, law enforcement and child protective services observed via a discreet livestream, gathering the necessary evidence without forcing Maya to repeat her story.

  • Wraparound Family Advocacy: While Maya was being interviewed, a Family Advocate sat with her grandmother, offering a listening ear, connecting her to emergency financial aid, and helping her navigate the complex legal system.

  • Specialized Medical Care: A child abuse pediatrician conducted a gentle, trauma-informed medical exam to ensure Maya was safe and healthy, explaining every step to ease her fears.

The Turning Point

The road to recovery didn't end on day one. Maya and her grandmother returned to the CAC weekly for Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

Through evidence-based therapy, Maya learned that the abuse was not her fault. She learned how to process her fear and anger, while her grandmother learned the best ways to support her healing at home.

Thank you for being a vital part of our mission to restore hope and healing to children and families.
